Lord of the Sabbath

Scripture Reference: Matthew 12:8

We are all familiar with legalism. However, we often miss the wonder of the law. The Sabbath is a gift in the law (Deuteronomy 5:12) for refreshment and renewal. It is a time to remember the taking of humanity out from slavery, into restful, freedom. It is good to be healed. It brings refreshment to the bones and flesh, mind and heart.

In John 5:9 Jesus made a man well on the Sabbath. It seems from John 5:15, that the man was healed, but not really changed in his heart. This happens to people even within the Christian Church. A restlessness remains. Still, people remain unsatisfied with all that Jesus is for them. Sad about that. The Sabbath is a day of celebrating the rest which God gives to human beings, for their good. It is also an anticipation of the rest, which we shall know, in a creation set free from striving with sin, death and the devil. To be a Christian involves being holy, set apart - different. This includes a new, helpful approach to the Sabbath.

Jesus was quite deliberate in seeking to break the wrong tyranny of Fussy Sabbath keeping. This was a misuse of the Sabbath. Jesus is still Lord of the Sabbath. In our frantic world, it may well be a deliberate act to break the wrong tyranny of abusing 'the Sabbath' - (whatever day it it for us), by refusing once again to do too much on the Sabbath. Today the tyranny is ignoring the 'resting' in Christ, which is needful to refresh a human being.

Let's come under the Lordship of the Lord of the Sabbath and cease from our continual restless activity. It may well be healing to the the flesh, and once again a prophetic new way of communicating the mystery of grace to our world. The law is still prophetic, and need not be legalistic at all. Enter his rest! By faith, enter! Ahh. Very refreshing; Peace which passes all understanding.
