"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you."
John 14:27

We have some difficulty understanding this verse because we are inclined to approach it only with human understanding instead of spirit understanding. The peace that Jesus gives is much more than a dose of medicine when we are emotionally or spiritually sick. His peace gift to us is Himself. He is the Prince of Peace. When He returned to heaven, He gave us Himself, not in the form of one dose from the big bottle of medicine, but His complete self in the person of the Holy Spirit, a function of God. He takes the issue of our peace very seriously. He also gives us uneasy feelings (conviction,) which condition us for peace. To experience peace requires us to make a faith decision.

PRAYER

Show me my thoughts, Holy Spirit, and show me the things in my life that block Your peace. Thank You for the wonderful gift of Yourself that I may have inner contentment. I now allow You to enlarge Yourself in my mind and life.

A RICH HERITAGE

At the 58th Annual Convention of the Diocese of South Carolina on February 1847, Mr. Henry D. Lesesne, local attorney and chairman of the Vestry at St. Philip's Church, introduced resolutions to provide religious instruction to the Charleston slave population. The Reverend Paul Trapier was chosen as minister of the proposed congregation to be known as CALVARY CHURCH. A committee, chaired by Lesesne, purchased a lot at the corner of Beaufain and Wilson Streets for $1200. Construction was delayed due to shortfalls on pledges.
In March 1848, Father Trapier began holding services for the Calvary congregation in the basement of St. Philip's parsonage, then moved to a large room over a carriage warehouse on Meeting Street. Special seats were set aside for whites. As laws prohibited teaching slaves to read, all church and Sunday School instruction had to be oral. In 1849, the committee entered into a construction contract for a brick building capable of holding 600 persons. A riot broke out at the Work House (Negro Jail) which was a short block from the building in July of 1849. About 30 prisoners escaped, were captured, tried, imprisoned, and one was hanged. On Saturday night, July 14, 1849, after the trial, a mob gathered to destroy the nearly completed building. Mr. James Pettigru, local lawyer and member of St. Michael's Church, and several others addressed the mob and saved the building which was completed and consecrated on December 23, 1849.
In 1940, under much pressure, the property (already practically surrounded by the project) was sold to the City of Charleston Housing Authority for expansion of the Robert Mills Manor for whites. Monies from the sale were used to purchase the present building at Line and Percy Streets. Service ended at the old building on November 25, 1940, the church was deconsecrated, and the building was later destroyed. Although Calvary Church was a parish under the State incorporation laws, it was still recognized as a mission until May 5, 1965 when it was admitted to the Convention of the Diocese of South Carolina. The Reverend Stephen B. Mackey, the Vicar, became the first Rector. We celebrated our 150th Anniversary in 1997. Our Day School was founded in 1920 and has served the Charleston community in educating our children since that time.
