BRIEF HISTORY:
Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church was chartered on May 4, 1770 by the Reverend John Michael Enterline, shortly after he arrived in the Lykens Valley from Germany. Pastor Enterline conducted his services in a small log cabin on land donated by Johann Adam Wirth (Wert), and for many years after, the congregation and building were known as Wirth's Church. Not only did the cabin serve as a place of worship, but also as a school for local children.
In mid-summer of 1773, Father Enterline, as he was affectionately known, moved his growing congregation into a newly built church. This building was a more formal structure with a steeple and bell. In 1873, with a continually growing congregation, again, a new and larger church was needed. The new church was dedicated on May 17, 1874 and is still in use by the congregation today.
Doctrinal Statement:
Salem is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Lower Susquehanna Synod. We believe the the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Inspired Word of God. We acknowledge the three ecumenical creeds (The Apostle's, The Nicene, and The Athanasian) as true statements of the Holy Christian Faith. As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church we also accept the Unaltered Augsburg Confession and Martin Luther's Small Catechism. We believe in the True Presence of the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Eucharist.
