Greetings to you from the people of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Calgary, in sunny Alberta! We are located on the north side of the city, on the corner of Berkshire Boulevard and Beddington Boulevard. Nearby are the housing areas of Huntington Hills, Beddington, Sandstone, MacEwan, Harvents Hills, Country Hills, Hidden Valley and Coventry Hills. As our history explains, our congregation has been in existence since 1918. We have shared this building with Ascension Parish since 1989. We are two separate congregations, with different Christian traditions. Our common building is called the Sandstone Valley Ecumenical Centre.
We, the people of Mount Calvary believe and trust that the God of the universe has come into our human community in the person of Jesus; that God had "good news" of the forgiveness and new life for all people in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. With our brothers and sisters in Christ of other denominations, we share a common bond of faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord.
My name is Gary Watts, and I am the pastor of our Lutheran congregation. We are a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada. I was born in raised in Vancouver, B.C. Most of my ministry has been in western Canada. I have been a parish pastor, a penitentiary chaplain, a university professor, and a military chaplain. I have been pastor here at Mount Calvary for the past eight years.
A priority for us at Mount Calvary is our own ministry to the children. Our Sunday School, for children ages 3 to 12 years, starts at 9:30 A.M. Please refer to the information section for more particulars about this and other opportunities for Christian growth. As Christian people we desire to serve our Lord in all areas of our lives - school, work, home, and community. We all struggle with the ups and downs of our personal lives. However, God's good news for us in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus influences how we understand our world and the significance of our daily life.
We trust in the forgiveness and strength of God, offered to all people in Jesus Christ. Jesus said: "I have come that you might have life, and have it in all its fullness!" We pray that newcomers will discover Him in our midst. If you live in this area of Calgary and do not have a church home, we invite you to worship with us.
Thank you for visiting our website. Wherever in the world you are, we wish you God's blessings, and greet you in the name of Jesus. "One Lord, one faith, one baptism."
