Founded in 1918, Mount Calvary was the first English speaking Lutheran church in downtown Calgary. Through the years, under the guidance of nine different pastors, the congregation has sought to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

Ecumenism became a ministry emphasis in 1975 when The Calgary Interfaith office was housed in the church's "Upper Room". Eventually, the congregation went into partnership with the Roman Catholic Diosese to build the present unique Sandstone Valley Ecumenical Centre. This Centre contains Lutheran and Catholic sanctuaries for separate worship areas. There are shared office spaces and recreational facilities. Opportunities and challenges continually arise as we strive to demonstrate the true spirit of Ecumenism - (how Christians can help each other and work together to promote God's kingdom and better inter-Christian relationships in the community). Wolfe's Stained Glass Window

A link to the early years of the Mount Calvary Congregation was preserved in the "Wolfe" stained glass window, taken from the downtown building and installed in our present sanctuary. It was in the home of Edward Wolfe that a group of committed Christians met in 1918, to formulate plans to build a church. Their vision and desire to share the gospel of Christ has been passed down through these 80 years and continues into the new millennium! The added ecumenical emphasis of ministry is an important aspect of Mount Calvary's membership. Our Lord's final prayer for unity in the gospel of John, chapter 17, is the incentive for this work. This ministry is unique to Mount Calvary, in Calgary Alberta. The Centre has been in operation for over a decade.
